What is MetaData?
Simply put, MetaData is data about data.
It is descriptive information about a particular data set, object, or resource, including how it is formatted, and when and by whom it was collected.
Although MetaData most commonly refers to web resources, it can be about either physical or electronic resources. It may be created automatically using software or entered by hand.
Large Companies have vast amount of Data. This can be Secure Data, Private Data, User Profile data, Personal Data (ITunes Library, movies etc.) Human Resource, Marketing, Sales, Finance (Spreadsheet), Manufacturing and so on. There are tools which can be used on BIg Data via MetaData to analyze the Location and Ownership of data. These Tools can generate Reports to Department Groups to allow for Charge backs for data which has Aged beyond 5 years, and to Identify the Category of Data along with Ownership. Data Can then be Archived, Purged, Moved to lower cost Cloud and or Deleted Once Legal Department has signed off on the plan.
